Stuck Behind a Paywall?

Stuck Behind a Paywall?

Doing research? Trying to write a paper and keep getting stuck behind paywalls?

Here’s are a few resources that will help you to be more successful in your quest for knowledge:

  1. openaccessbutton.org. It’s like your library on steroids and includes search results from major databases like

2. https://12ft.io/
12ft Ladder is easy to use and easy to remember. If google is indexing the page without a paywall it will display it. It works quite well.

3. Free trials. Most sites offer free trials that allow you to view premium content for a limited amount of time for free.

4. Incognito mode. If you get a few free articles before being blocked, try viewing the page in incognito mode to prevent being tracked and letting on that you’ve already visited their page.

5. Use a different browser. Using a different browser can also allow you to view a page you’ve already been to that’s started to block access.

6. Clear your browser’s history. Clearing your browsers history can make the page forget you’ve already used your limited amount of free views and give you a few more.

7. Firefox + extension. If you’re not opposed to using Firefox and installing an extension, there is a long list of sites with paywalls that can be accessed. You might want to see if the site you’re trying to reach is on the list. You can read more about it here:

Note: If you regularly visit a site that wants you to pay, you should consider doing it. If you only need to read one or two articles though, maybe these tips will be able to help you out.

If you have a favorite method you like to use that I missed, please let me know and I’ll be sure to add it!
