My Impossible Burger

My Impossible Burger

So with all the talk about the “Impossible Burger” I thought it was time to introduce my version.  Lets just call it the”Possible Burger”, and it’s good. I mean really good. Before you say anything. Did I mention it’s really good.

The Possible Burger

1 – Can Black Beans
1 – Egg *
1 – tsp cumin
1/4 cup cooked quinoa
1/2 cup bread crumbs (or more )
2-3 tbl of onions
2-3 tbl of bell peppers
1/4 cup olive oil – Pan fry med heat until golden brown
4 – Large Hamburger buns

Makes 4 burgers and one meatball
.
Tip: make meatless meatballs instead of burgers, works well in salads and even soups.

My fav – top with pepper jack, bbq sauce and pickles.

Cook up the Quinoa. I used the red in this example but any color works.

Use 1/4 cup of quinoa, then bring to a boil in 3/4 cup of water.  Then simmer covered until water has boiled away. About 13 minutes.

Next -while the Quinoa is cooking….

Mix one can of black beans (drained) with one egg.

* If staying vegan you can replace the egg with a mix of 1 tbs of chia seeds or ground flax seeds with 2 -1/2 tbs of water. Let soak until they start to gel, about 15 minutes.

Now add 1 tsp of cumin.

You can experiment here, adding a dash of hot sauce or some black pepper if you like a little bit more of a bite to your burger.

2-3 tbl of onions, I like the sweet onions.

2-3 tbl of Bell Peppers.

Green peppers bother me so I don’t use them.

If I don’t use a whole pepper in a recipe I cut them up and put them in the freezer for recipes like this. I just chopped these up a little finer and they were ready to add in.

We should be looking something like this.

Add our Quinoa

Bread Crumbs – 1/2 cup.

Mix it up throughly. Use a fork and make an effort to mash some of the beans. No need to mash all of them, just enough to help you mix everything together.

If too moist add more breadcrumbs.

If too dry add a few drops of water.

In a cast iron pan heat up your 3-4 tablespoons of olive oil, medium heat.

Time to form the patties. I can get 5 regular sized burgers or 4 large patties. I often end up with enough left over after scrapping the bowl to also get a little meatless meatball. I like to use this to monitor how things are cooking. Plus the cook has to taste everything first.

Cook for about 4 minutes on medium high heat before flipping. Once flipped figure about 3 minutes before done.

Use the meatless meatball as your guide or gently lift up a patty and check.

Don’t forget to toast your buns.

Decorate your burger as you please.

Tomato’s and pepper jack cheese with a little bbq works for me.

Enjoy!

There are a lot of good things going on here but most important is it’s flavor. It’s a very filling burger, it can be easily modified to suit different tastes. It is a healthy alternative, has no refrigerated items – providing you use an egg alternative. Is easy to make and sustainable.

If you have tried it, let us know what you think. I am interested in modifications!
